NTA to Refund ₹1,700 to NEET Aspirants After Cancellation of Exam Amid Paper Leak Controversy

The National Testing Agency has started the refund process for lakhs of NEET UG 2026 aspirants after the cancellation of the May 3 medical entrance examination following allegations of a paper leak.

Candidates from the General category are eligible for a refund of ₹1,700, while different refund amounts have been announced for other categories based on the original application fee structure.

The cancelled examination triggered nationwide outrage among students and parents, many of whom had spent nearly an entire year preparing for one of India’s most competitive entrance exams.

Refund Amounts by Category

According to NTA guidelines, the refund amounts are expected to be:

  • ₹1,700 for General category candidates
  • ₹1,600 for OBC-NCL and EWS candidates
  • ₹1,000 for SC/ST/PwD/Third Gender candidates
  • ₹9,500 for overseas candidates

The refund process is being conducted online through the official NEET portal, where students must submit or verify bank account details for direct transfers.

NEET Exam Cancelled After Leak Allegations

The original NEET UG 2026 exam held on May 3 was scrapped after allegations of paper leaks and irregularities surfaced across multiple regions.

The controversy quickly escalated into one of the biggest examination scandals in recent Indian education history, prompting:

  • Government intervention
  • A CBI investigation
  • Public protests by students
  • Legal scrutiny
  • Nationwide debate on exam security

Authorities later announced that the NEET UG re-examination would be conducted again on June 21, 2026.

Students Frustrated After Year-Long Preparation

The refund announcement has generated mixed reactions online.

Many students argued that while the refund provides some relief, the emotional stress, lost preparation time, and uncertainty caused by the cancellation cannot be compensated financially.

NEET remains one of India’s toughest entrance exams, with millions of students competing annually for limited medical college seats.

For many aspirants, preparation involves:

  • Full-year coaching programs
  • Intensive study schedules
  • Relocation to coaching hubs
  • Significant financial pressure on families

Social media platforms have been flooded with criticism from students who say the refund amount does not reflect the scale of disruption caused by the exam cancellation.

NTA Introduces Refund Portal

NTA has clarified that:

  • No additional fee will be charged for the re-exam
  • Previous registration data will remain valid
  • Students can update bank account information through the refund module

The agency has also warned candidates to use only the official NEET portal to avoid refund scams and unofficial links circulating online.

Wider Debate on India’s Examination System

The NEET controversy has reignited broader discussions around:

  • Examination security
  • Coaching culture
  • Student mental health
  • Digital monitoring systems
  • Accountability within testing agencies

Education experts say the incident may push authorities toward major structural reforms in India’s national entrance examination system.

The government has already indicated that future NEET examinations may gradually transition toward computer-based formats to reduce paper leak risks and improve exam integrity.
